Sun is the brightest star in our solar system and has always been of great significance in both religion and astrology. A major influence in any natal chart, sun takes a back seat in Horary as the all mighty Goddess in our art is Moon. However, it maintains some critical importance in delineating horary charts as, besides being a possible significator or a ruler of a house, sun also has some unique attributes based on its very nature.
The strongest and most unlucky is combustion.

Combustion is the worst possible debilitation in any horary chart. Naturally, it is one of the main considerations in Horary. Lilly wrote:

And you must know that the combustion of any planet is the greatest misfortune that can be

and he mentions Arabs insisted on the obscure:

If the Lord of the Ascendant be combust, neither question propounded will take, or Querent be regulated.

Sun is hot and dry. Excessively hot. He burns every other planet that happens to be too close, even the moon. Any planet within 8 degrees and 30 minutes the Sun, in the same sign, is considered combust. It doesn’t alter its meaning if the conjunction is separating or applying (though is somewhat more powerful when Sun “hastens in conjunction” than when it recedes. It matters if they are separated from a sign cusp; combustion works ONLY if it is happening within a sign.
Keep in mind that sometimes, if the other planet is strongly dignified and has power over the sun (like being its domicile dispositor), it softens the impact.

Any planet suffering combustion, is rendered weak at the very best, downright malicious at worst.
The combust planet is extremely weakened, or shows mischief (especially in the case of Mercury), or shows “inability to be seen or heard”, or shows death, health detriment and so on, depending on what the planet being combust signifies and what matter the question is about. The fortunes lose their power to do good and the infortunes are rendered either weak or more malicious depending on their dignities.

If moon, without being a main significator is in combustion, gives a “not fit to be judged” chart, or gives a negative answer (the later especially if it is applying). You can go ahead and read the chart but you already have a red alert that something will go south.

If the querent’s significator is combust, is in “great fear”, overpowered by someone and/or hidden. I will add that, the querent may also find themselves facing some danger or trouble and upheaval.
If we ask about someone’s ability or dignity and his significator is combust, we can judge he is not good or suitable or honest.

“Is this lawyer a good one?” with his significator combust -> No, he is too weak or a swindler.
“Is she honest with me?” with her significator combust -> No, she is hiding something.

If you care to investigate further you will find out that there is dispute on the exact degrees of combustion but here, I will use Lilly’s choice of 8º30′ degrees. You can also find articles and books about the use of combustion in natal chart delineations.

“So, what if I ask a love horary and Sun is my sweetheart’s significator and my own significator is applying a conjunction to sun? Isn’t this combustion? Am I in danger?”
Yes it still is combustion and no, no danger here, but you are burning hot about your sweetheart, rendered weak due to your love and perhaps in fear of losing him/her. If though, in addition to that conjunction, moon is in Via Combusta, I would be cautious.
Context and common sense are important.

Will she return?

Posted by Wroskopos on November 19, 2009

The querent was a male in his thirties and when he came to me he appeared to be on the verge of tears. His fiance had broken their engagement and he felt devastated. His question was whether she would return to him.

While I cast the chart, I expected to see his main significator in his detriment (at the very least), however, I was surprised to see him well dignified by being domicile and ruling the girl’s significator. The lesson was to trust horary and you will see why.

The querent is signified by a domicile Venus (essentially dignified) in the 12th house of ‘self-undoing’, a placement that makes Venus quite playful in Venusian games – flirting being the main of them. Moon is his co-significator, also in the 12th house, signifying his stress and unhappiness about the situation.

His fiance is signified by a detrimented Mars in Taurus. It describes her perfectly, her being Aries and a rather stubborn one. By the detriment, we deduct that she wasn’t enjoying herself but, how could that be? She left him, she “couldn’t stand it more” and she had an affair.

Venus and Mars are moving to a conjunction in about 1 degree. She will return, they will be together again and nothing in the chart hinders this reunion.

Even though the chart shows stress, the domicile Venus is so dignified that it couldn’t possibly represent my querent. I was very skeptical whether I had read the chart correctly, even though it is a rather simple chart to delineate. Only 3 days after the horary, he was laughing and exalted and proved that Venus correct, by having numerous flirts and affairs over the next months. Her detriment proved also true though I won’t mention the details.

They were back together after approximately 4 months.

Via Combusta ©

Posted by Wroskopos on November 19, 2009

Merely adding copyright (without editing the first post as to preserve date).

The “burnt pathway”, the “burned road”. Doesn’t sound too good, does it?
Via Combusta is an important celestial area for astrology. It extends on the zodiac area between 15 degrees Libra and 15 degrees Scorpio. Is considered a gloomy, baleful area, often prognosticating bad luck and overall destruction to the question asked if a significator planet happens to be within those degrees in a Horary chart.

The two malefics are controlling its tolls, Saturn being in Exaltation in Libra and Mars is both Domicile and ruling the Triplicity in Scorpio. Additionally, the two luminaries suffer afflictions, as Sun is in Fall in Libra and Moon Falls in Scorpio, adding to an overall ominous combination.

An example to get the picture: Suppose you are under aged and your parents go on a short journey. A great opportunity for a party arises so you call friends in. Alas, two very mean guys show up too, both older and stronger than you and both the worst type of persons one can find. You are too weak to get rid of them or just hope nothing too bad will happen. So, the Malefics are having a party time at your expense and the two major forces, your parents (the luminaries), are away on a trip, unable to protect the house. Chances are, some very nasty things will happen.

In classical astrology, any planet on this part of the sky was supposed to be badly influenced and a barer of bad luck. Horary astrologers take great notice of whether the ascendant of the question or -worse- Moon herself lies in Via Combusta as it makes the chart difficult to interpret (positively at least).
As the moon is the most essential celestial body in Horary, is always considered a bad omen for the outcome or the interpretation of any question to find it on Via Combusta. Moon can’t perform properly here, is unlucky, distressed and unpredictable. We are warned by Lilly, Al Biruni and Bonatius to defer judgment when Moon is in Via Combusta as Moon is afflicted. Culpeper writes “beware of the end of Libra and the beginning of Scorpio” and Gadbury elaborates that “things go unluckily on and the astrologer should understand the question perfectly avoiding a poor judgment”.
So far, every time I have seen a Moon in Via Combusta, with the exception of being right on Spica (an oasis of good luck in the burned road, posited on about 25th degrees of Libra), proves to give a negative outcome for the question.
Caution here: not a negative “answer” necessarily, a negative “outcome”.

Concerning Horary charts, the ascendant on Via Combusta renders the Querent on unlucky terms. May just be scared and expecting a disaster or can pretty much already experiencing that disaster, especially if his Significator planet also treads the burnt way. The rest of the planets are not that important, unless they are significators able to perform in the particular question.

In certain questions, such as pregnancy ones, Moon on Via Combusta can give a detrimental outcome. Remember here that when moon enters Scorpio it also enters its own fall. Finding for example a child’s significator or the moon in Via Combusta and Scorpio, assuming that we have no -extremely- strong positive indications pointing to a different outcome, it can show us an abortion or literally a fall of the child, a miscarriage. Please, do not jump in conclusions by merely seeing a single significator on Via Combusta. You should consider the overall testimonies of the chart, given by the receptions, houses and aspects.
What could add more jinx-factor to a chart apart a significator or the moon herself on Via Combusta? Well, we still have the Nodes of the Moon. Either North or South, they both will bring an unlucky or downright disastrous incident. Even more so, if the are in conjunction bodily, by parallel or antiscia with our Moon or our Significators. Nodes however have this jinxy influence on their own and they deserve their own article in the future.

A legitimate question is whether Via Combusta still lies in the same degrees it did in ancient and medieval times. Precession of the equinoxes has moved the signs forward on the ecliptic and so today’s Via appears in different degrees than it did in Ptolemy’s or Lilly’s times. Using sidereal charts in comparison to tropical ones, we can see that the ‘burned way’ today lies between Scorpio and Sagittarius. As a result, using sidereal charts for Horary will give us completely different Via Combusta degrees and therefore different interpretations. Which is the correct approach?
Having in mind precession, I study whether the ill influence of the Via is based upon its position on the ecliptic or somewhere beyond, and I believe that it still is in relatively the same position in relation to earth that it used to occupy two thousand years ago and therefore, still giving the same results it used to give in medieval times by using tropical geocentric charts.

Posted by Wroskopos on November 16, 2009
